Jelly Roll Rug

Once you learn the technique, you can make rugs of various shapes and sizes, place mats, hot plates, totes, bags and more.  They wash up great.  I've had one at my back door for years!

You can make a rug that measures 30x44 or a set of 4 placemats with one Jelly-Roll ( or any forty-two 2-1/2 inch fabric strips, and 100 percent cotton batting). So grab your favorite Jelly-Roll and join us.

Using a unique technique of folding the strips and then attaching the strips together, you make a wonderful rug that is washable! The class will start with a tutorial of the technique involved and you will make a small mat/coaster using supplies from the instructor to perfect your skills before starting on your rug.

PREP WORK FOR CLASS:  

-Join all of your 2-1/2 inch fabric strips end to end, on the diagonal (mitered seam) before coming to class. Press seams open.   If you are not sure how to do this, come in at least a week before class and we can show you.

Supplies:  (Purchased supplies at Juneberry Cottage for the class receive a 15% discount)

1.  Sewing machine in good working order. Machine MUST be able to do a zig zag stitch!

• Walking Foot HIGHLY recommended. Make sure it has an opening for the zig zag stitch.

2. Pattern -- "Jelly Roll Rug 2"

3. Jelly Rolls - either 2 sets of 20 or one set of 40. If doing the placemats, you will also need an additional 1/2 yard of matching/coordinating fabric for the binding

4. Batting - either 1 1/4 yard of 100% Cotton or 80/20 Poly/Cotton Batting 90-96" wide, cut into 2 1/4" strips before class (38 strips needed for the rug, 20 for a set of 2 placemats)

5. Thread that coordinates or matches your fabric strips - regular sewing thread is used and LOTS of it - 1000M spool, 3-5 wound bobbins for regular class 15 sized bobbins  (2 for a Bernina Jumbo bobbin on the 4-9 series machines)

6.  Size 14 or 16 Denim, Microtex or Topstitch Sewing Needle

7. Scissors , Seam Ripper,  Fabric marking pen (optional) Fabric Tube Maker tool is also helpful, but not required.

8. A large sewing table attachment is recommended. It makes the construction of the rug much easier to manage. *** we can order a sewing table for you. It takes 14-21 days to arrive***  A box or bolts of fabric the height of your sewing machine bed can work in a pinch.
